In Badolato Borgo, Holy Saturday is not just a mere date on the calendar. On the contrary, it represents a deep collective heartbeat. On this day, the “Penitential Procession of the Sorrowful Mysteries” takes place. This ancient rite transforms the entire afternoon into a spiritual eternity. Indeed, it is a grueling 12-kilometer journey that lasts for over eight hours, turning the stones and valleys of the village into a theater where pain turns into hope.

The White Robes of the Confraternity
While the entire community waits in silence for the three Brotherhoods, it is the Confraternity of Maria SS. Immacolata that charts the course of this sacrifice. Starting in the early afternoon, the Disciplinari begin to advance, offering a sight that strikes deep into the soul.
These men wear pure white robes and carry a crown of thorns upon their brows. Furthermore, the dull thud of the disciplina—the metal chain whip—accompanies their slow steps. Therefore, this is not a performance. It is a secret and raw dialogue between man and God, echoing a Middle Ages that never truly passed.

A Living Jerusalem in the Alleys of the Village
History comes to life around the penitents thanks to over two hundred costumed figures. Consequently, the village is transformed into a living Jerusalem. The Christ bent under the heavy cross, the Thieves, and the centurions move through the narrow alleys.
Moreover, the Alabardieri stand out significantly, as their historical costumes evoke ancient Spanish echoes. These figures move through the rughe (the wrinkles of our streets) like presences from an eternal time.

The Sacred Effigies and Archaic Songs
However, the most intense emotion explodes as the sacred effigies finally pass. The crowd watches the Varetta with the Dead Christ and the statue of Our Lady of Sorrows (L’Addolorata). Behind them walk the Addoloratine, dressed in dark garments symbolizing universal mourning.
Along this path, the heavy silence is pierced by the songs of male choirs. In fact, these are archaic melodies and haunting polyphonies that seem to rise from the earth itself. They carry the lament of entire generations straight to the heavens.

Physical Endurance and Sacral Landscape
Yet, this long procession is not only a matter of faith. It is also a feat of real physical endurance. The cortege leaves the embrace of the old houses to descend into the belly of the valley. Then, the faithful climb the steep slopes back toward the Convent of Santa Maria degli Angeli.
Every single step on the grueling inclines repeats a piece of centuries-old history. Consequently, every drop of sweat shed upon the ancient stones becomes an act of love for one’s roots. During these long hours, Badolato ceases to be a mere point on a map. Ultimately, it becomes a living Golgotha, where the Calabrian landscape merges with the mystery of the sacred.
