Herculaneum: the spectacle of dawn

PiCo — Sat, 20 Jul 2024 21:00:30 +0000

While the sun begins to rise, visitors find themselves immersed in one of the most evocative and history-rich locations in the Mediterranean. Indeed, the Archaeological Park of Herculaneum, with its ancient streets and ruins, reveals itself in a completely new light, shrouded in the warm colors of the morning.
The visit begins with a stroll along the paths that, two thousand years ago, teemed with life. At this hour, the silence of dawn is broken only by the musical notes that accompany the visitors, creating a truly magical atmosphere.
Specifically, the performances are interpreted by the captivating voice of Marina Bruno, accompanied by Enzo Pietropaoli on double bass and Daniele Sepe on saxophone. Through this blend of history and melody, the ancient city is brought back to life in a sensory journey that stays with the soul.

Champions’ Museums: the collectible ticket for Napoli’s scudetto victory

PiCo — Sun, 04 Jun 2023 21:55:54 +0000

The Cultural Initiative
To celebrate Napoli’s historic third Scudetto (Serie A championship title), starting Sunday, June 4, 2023—coinciding with the final match of the season and the traditional free-admission Sunday—the main cultural sites in Naples and the Campania region launched a special collectible ticket. This initiative, born from a collaboration with CoopCulture, features a limited run of 200,000 exclusive souvenir tickets available while stocks last.

Graphic Design and Symbolism
The ticket features a deeply iconic image for the Campanian capital: the famous Maradona mural in the Spanish Quarters (Quartieri Spagnoli), captured by photographer Pino Codispoti. This design choice aims to blend the historical and artistic value of Campania’s museums with the city’s profound popular passion and sporting identity.

Participating Sites
Numerous prominent institutions joined the project, spanning across both the city center and the archaeological area:

Downtown Naples: National Archaeological Museum (MANN), Museum and Royal Park of Capodimonte, Royal Palace (Palazzo Reale), Certosa and Museum of San Martino, Castel Sant’Elmo, and Villa Pignatelli.
Phlegraean Area: Archaeological Park of the Phlegraean Fields (Archaeological Site of Cuma, Baia Castle and Thermal Baths, Flavian Amphitheater in Pozzuoli), and Rione Terra.

The third heartbeat: Naples and Lady Luck in 2023

PiCo — Wed, 03 May 2023 22:31:01 +0000

After a thirty-three-year wait, on May 4, 2023, Napoli became Champions of Italy for the third time in their history. Under the tactical guidance of Luciano Spalletti, the Azzurri dominated the league with a modern, brave, and harmonious style of football. Driven by Victor Osimhen’s goals and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia’s magic, they mathematically sealed the title at the Dacia Arena in Udine.

The Azzurra Night: A City in Ecstasy
At the final whistle, Naples didn’t just celebrate; it was completely transfigured. Indeed, the night of the victory saw the city transform into an immense open-air theater.

Starting from the narrow alleys of the Spanish Quarters down to the waterfront of Via Partenope, every single square meter was covered in blue ribbons, flags, and murals. This collective effort created a dreamlike atmosphere of “perennial azure.” Meanwhile, an uninterrupted symphony of car horns, stadium chants, and fireworks illuminated the gulf, making the celebration visible miles away.

Consequently, the celebration transcended football, becoming a collective ritual of belonging and identity pride. The crowd was made up of different generations, spanning from those who lived through the Maradona era to youth who had never seen him play. Together, they flooded historic squares like Piazza del Plebiscito and Piazza Dante in a peaceful, overwhelming embrace.

Ultimately, the night of May 4, 2023, will forever be etched as the moment Naples reconciled its legendary past with a radiant present. It proved that victory was not just a statistical milestone. Instead, it was a true anthropological explosion of joy that permanently redefined the urban landscape and the very soul of its inhabitants.

The Supreme Chant: a Woman’s Voice in the wounded forest

PiCo — Sun, 22 Aug 2021 16:11:42 +0000

Badolato: Where Ashes Become Song.

Black charcoal and grey ashes are suffocating the vibrant green of the Mediterranean scrub in the lower Ionian leap of Calabria. Indeed, during the night, the fierce red of the fire dazzles the mountains while a dense column of smoke deeply wounds the starry sky.

Consequently, a light, almost silent ash settles softly upon our houses, while the intense heat burns both our skin and our soul.

During the day, the deafening roar of Canadair planes and helicopters turns the landscape into an apocalyptic film set. However, the fire continues to advance relentlessly, devouring centuries-old olive trees, oaks, and chestnuts. Therefore, after twelve long days of siege, the sense of helplessness becomes total, and you feel yourself burning inside.

This brings us to art as an answer to the impossible. Indeed, where nature falls silent, Art raises its voice with strength. Moreover, the local community has gathered tightly around the Teatro del Carro to say a definitive “no” to this environmental disaster.

Consequently, among the charred trees of the Badolato forest, within a lunar and ghostly landscape, the verses of the Supreme Poet Dante have found a new, vital breath.

The performance “L’ALTISSIMO CANTO. In Voce di Donna” (The Supreme Chant: In a Woman’s Voice), conceived and directed by Luca Maria Michienzi, has successfully transformed this immense pain into a powerful testament. In fact, the voices of Annamaria Zuccaro, Anna Maria de Luca, Lucia Cristofano, and Paola Tarantino, beautifully accompanied by the music of Remo De Vico, have pierced the heavy silence of the ashes. Ultimately, they have restored humanity to a place where everything seemed lost forever.

Caravaggio Napoli: darkness and light. A visual chronicle of the landmark exhibition at Capodimonte.

PiCo — Tue, 09 Apr 2019 14:27:11 +0000

The photographic lens navigates the deliberately darkened rooms of the Sala Causa at the National Museum of Capodimonte, piercing the gloom to capture the deepest, most visceral essence of “Caravaggio Napoli”. This visual chronicle retraces the tense, almost brutal dialogue between Michelangelo Merisi’s masterpiece canvases and the raw reality of the Neapolitan alleyways, documenting an unprecedented, immersive staging that defined the 2019 exhibition season.
From the explosive, dramatic muscular power of the Flagellation to the tragic, intimate farewell captured in the Martyrdom of Saint Ursula: every single shot renders that violent contrast of light and shadow which became the master’s stylistic signature. The gallery offers a close-up, unprecedented gaze at those anatomical and expressive details that literally revolutionised the course of Neapolitan art history.

The eternal dialogue: Igor Mitoraj in Pompeii

PiCo — Sun, 29 Jan 2017 00:25:12 +0000

This extraordinary exhibition represents an unprecedented encounter between Roman archaeology and contemporary sculpture. Indeed, within the Archaeological Park, the visitor witnesses a captivating temporal short-circuit. It is a unique space where the works of the Polish master seem to re-emerge from the past alongside the very ruins of the ancient city.

This brings us directly to the breathtaking layout nestled within the heart of the ancient city. Consequently, approximately 30 monumental bronze sculptures now populate the most significant sectors of the excavations. These masterpiece works are by no means isolated inside a traditional museum. On the contrary, they live in the open air, fully immersed within the surrounding archaeological landscape.

Furthermore, specific historical sites host these powerful figures. The Temple of Venus, for instance, houses the imposing figure of Daedalus, who gazes directly out towards the sea. Meanwhile, the Civil Forum welcomes large, bandaged faces and powerful male torsi that tower majestically among the ancient columns.

In addition, the Triangular Forum features the famous fallen Icarus as its main protagonist. Moving forward, the Via dell’Abbondanza and the Thermal Baths present fractured fragments of bodies and mythological deities that accompany tourists along their path.

This layout perfectly highlights the unique aesthetics of the fragment. In fact, Mitoraj’s sculptures blend seamlessly with the environment because they intentionally speak the language of ruin. Therefore, although they were crafted in the modern era, the statues appear deeply marked by history.
Paradoxically, they are completely mutilated or broken, which beautifully recalls the missing limbs of ancient classical statues. Because they are mysteriously bandaged, they strongly suggest the silence of history and the deep mystery of time. Consequently, they appear monumental yet profoundly fragile. This striking contrast between the strength of bronze and the sense of incompleteness accurately reflects the vulnerability of the human condition, mirroring the tragic history of Pompeii itself.

Ultimately, the deep meaning of this entire experience transforms Pompeii into a spectacular, open-air gallery. Within this space, classical and modern art speak the exact same language. The mythological figures of Mitoraj—such as Icarus, the Centaurs, and Tyndareus—are not mere decorations. Instead, they stand as silent, powerful presences that seem to reinhabit the squares and temples. Therefore, they pay a profound tribute to the memory of the site, successfully fulfilling the artist’s posthumous wish.

Wind, gulf, and carbon: America’s Cup in Naples

PiCo — Sun, 21 Apr 2013 00:30:01 +0000

It is more than just a regatta; it is an ancestral duel between engineering and spirit. Under the immutable gaze of Mount Vesuvius, fiber lines tighten, aerodynamic profiles pierce the air, and hulls—light as feathers yet strong as steel—dance upon the waves. This is the stage that only the Gulf of Naples can provide: a unique blend of classical beauty and extreme futurism.

Carbon Fiber
Cold, dark, and molded for speed. Every frame, every mast, is a masterpiece of science that defies gravity and the laws of physics. The photographs capture that fleeting moment where technology vanishes, leaving only the pure essence of velocity.

The Wind
It is not merely an element; it is both adversary and ally. You see it in the strained faces of the sailors, in the ripples upon the sea, and in the way the air swells the wing-shaped sails. It is the invisible energy that propels these marine racing machines far beyond the limit.

The Gulf
The soul of this narrative. Deep azure merges with splashed silver, reflecting the magnificence of the city that serves as its backdrop. These regattas are not simple courses, but trajectories traced between Capri, Ischia, and the coast—where the millennial tradition of Mediterranean sailing meets the boldest modernity.
