This extraordinary exhibition represents an unprecedented encounter between Roman archaeology and contemporary sculpture. Indeed, within the Archaeological Park, the visitor witnesses a captivating temporal short-circuit. It is a unique space where the works of the Polish master seem to re-emerge from the past alongside the very ruins of the ancient city.

This brings us directly to the breathtaking layout nestled within the heart of the ancient city. Consequently, approximately 30 monumental bronze sculptures now populate the most significant sectors of the excavations. These masterpiece works are by no means isolated inside a traditional museum. On the contrary, they live in the open air, fully immersed within the surrounding archaeological landscape.

Furthermore, specific historical sites host these powerful figures. The Temple of Venus, for instance, houses the imposing figure of Daedalus, who gazes directly out towards the sea. Meanwhile, the Civil Forum welcomes large, bandaged faces and powerful male torsi that tower majestically among the ancient columns.

In addition, the Triangular Forum features the famous fallen Icarus as its main protagonist. Moving forward, the Via dell’Abbondanza and the Thermal Baths present fractured fragments of bodies and mythological deities that accompany tourists along their path.

This layout perfectly highlights the unique aesthetics of the fragment. In fact, Mitoraj’s sculptures blend seamlessly with the environment because they intentionally speak the language of ruin. Therefore, although they were crafted in the modern era, the statues appear deeply marked by history.
Paradoxically, they are completely mutilated or broken, which beautifully recalls the missing limbs of ancient classical statues. Because they are mysteriously bandaged, they strongly suggest the silence of history and the deep mystery of time. Consequently, they appear monumental yet profoundly fragile. This striking contrast between the strength of bronze and the sense of incompleteness accurately reflects the vulnerability of the human condition, mirroring the tragic history of Pompeii itself.

Ultimately, the deep meaning of this entire experience transforms Pompeii into a spectacular, open-air gallery. Within this space, classical and modern art speak the exact same language. The mythological figures of Mitoraj—such as Icarus, the Centaurs, and Tyndareus—are not mere decorations. Instead, they stand as silent, powerful presences that seem to reinhabit the squares and temples. Therefore, they pay a profound tribute to the memory of the site, successfully fulfilling the artist’s posthumous wish.
