Parco archeologico di Amiternum: the silent breath of sabine history

PiCo — Wed, 16 Sep 2026 08:32:50 +0000

Nestled in the hills of Abruzzo, just a few miles from L’Aquila, lies the ancient city of Amiternum—a place where stone still speaks directly to the heart. Here, the echo of the Sabine people and the grandeur of ancient Rome merge within a landscape of extraordinary beauty.
The remains of the majestic amphitheater and Roman theater emerge like elegant specters from a sea of pristine greenery. Walking among the bare stone tiers means embarking on a journey through time, suspended between architectural grandeur and the serenity of wild nature.
Every limestone block bathed in the mid-morning light tells stories of cheering crowds, forgotten spectacles, and daily life from over two thousand years ago. It is an ongoing dialogue between shadow and stone, where antiquity embraces the Appenine horizon.
Beneath the clear skies of the Gran Sasso, the silence surrounding these ruins is not absence, but living memory. A heritage waiting simply to be observed to reveal all its poetry.

The Aragonese Castle of Baia

PiCo — Tue, 16 Sep 2025 21:00:18 +0000

A Jewel of History and Landscape
The Aragonese Castle of Baia stands in a breathtaking scenic setting in Bacoli. It is one of the most significant monuments from the Aragonese rule in the Naples area. Since Roman times, this region was a renowned resort for emperors and aristocrats. For this reason, the area is still celebrated today for its ancient, sumptuous villas.
Transformations Over the Centuries
Alfonso of Aragon commissioned the castle’s construction toward the end of the 15th century. Over time, the structure underwent profound changes. The most decisive intervention was the restoration ordered by Viceroy Pedro Alvarez de Toledo in the first half of the 16th century. Subsequently, other important figures modified the complex, enriching the historical layers of this extraordinary site.
A Crossroads of Events and Cultures
The castle’s history is shaped by monumental events and military transitions. In the 18th century, the fortress hosted Austrian troops and, later, French forces. Beyond its strategic importance, the castle’s location enchants every visitor. From its walls, the view stretches from the ruins of Cuma to the Gulf of Pozzuoli, reaching as far as the islands of Capri, Ischia, and Procida.
The Archaeological Museum of the Phlegraean Fields
Today, the fortress serves as a prestigious exhibition space. It houses the Archaeological Museum of the Phlegraean Fields, which preserves artifacts from the National Archaeological Museum of Naples. The collection also includes numerous materials recovered from excavations across the entire Phlegraean territory. It is a magical place, perfect for those who wish to be cradled by the waves of beauty and history.

Piscina Mirabilis: the titanic hydraulic masterpiece, a monumental wonder of Bacoli

PiCo — Sun, 18 May 2025 22:47:29 +0000

Immerse yourself in the imposing silence of the Piscina Mirabilis, the largest Roman cistern ever constructed. Stepping onto the floor of what was once the immense water reserve for the Imperial Fleet of Misenum, you will be enveloped in a nearly sacred atmosphere.
The 48 massive columns in opus reticulatum, arranged across four aisles, soar upward to create the illusion of a Gothic cathedral carved into the rock. Here, the vaults are not adorned with frescoes, but with age-old traces left by the water itself.
The experience is a true journey through time: the cool, damp air, the light filtering through the upper windows casting golden blades upon the gray stone, and a sense of profound reverence for the engineering of two thousand years ago. It is a moment of pure, monumental contemplation.

The Trulli of Alberobello: a journey into the heart of Puglia

PiCo — Fri, 04 Apr 2025 21:00:20 +0000

Alberobello… a place that enchants at first sight, with its fairytale landscape of curious conical structures—stone hats, almost, emerging from silent alleys and sun-drenched squares. This UNESCO World Heritage site, nestled in the heart of Puglia, feels as though it has stepped straight out of a children’s storybook.
Its trulli, ancient peasant dwellings with mysterious origins, tell stories of centuries-old ingenuity and folk tradition through their unique shapes and the enigmatic symbols painted upon their roofs. Wandering through the narrow lanes is like stepping back in time, wrapped in a unique, suspended atmosphere. Every trullo has its own story; every corner offers a picturesque and unexpected glimpse.
Through these photographs, I wanted to share the soul of this extraordinary place with you—its simple beauty and that aura of eternal mystery that struck me so deeply.

Badolato: a mosaic of vistas and ancient silences

PiCo — Tue, 08 Oct 2024 13:42:25 +0000

Badolato stands as a captivating medieval village on the Ionian coast of Calabria, within the province of Catanzaro. The town is renowned for its ancient history and recent urban restoration initiatives. In fact, its extraordinary architecture immediately strikes visitors, offering unforgettable vistas at every turn. Perched firmly upon a hill, the village reveals itself as a historical labyrinth. This dense web of narrow alleys, steep staircases, and small squares opens unexpectedly onto luminous horizons. Consequently, visitors find themselves immersed in an atmosphere suspended between the earth and the sky.
These narrow passages are known locally as rughe and represent the most authentic essence of the town. Since they are often vaulted by supporting arches or nearly interlocking houses, they create evocative tunnels of light and shadow. These paths act as guardians of the town’s secrets. During the walk, the gaze is captured by portals crafted from hewn stone. Many are embellished with noble coats of arms or ancient inscriptions. Therefore, these elements are not merely decorative; they serve as silent witnesses to the past. They reflect the echoes of the colors and daily life of former generations.
The true strength of Badolato lies, however, in its dominant position over the landscape. Thanks to this strategic location, every viewpoint or boundary wall transforms into an unparalleled panoramic terrace. From these vantage points, the view sweeps unobstructed across the Costa degli Aranci and the deep blue of the Ionian Sea. At the same time, turning toward the hinterland allows one to admire the Gallipari stream valley reaching toward the Sila Piccola mountains. Today, this beauty is preserved through significant recovery efforts. Many abandoned houses have found new life thanks to an international community that has passionately restored local materials.

Nectar and Tradition: towards a sustainable future

PiCo — Wed, 11 Sep 2024 00:50:14 +0000

Through my photographic research, I intend to investigate life within local territories, portraying the identity of places through the stories of their inhabitants. In this narrative, bees do not represent a diversion; on the contrary, they constitute the common thread that indissolubly binds nature to human beings. Therefore, through my images, I propose a journey inside the complex and precious world of the beehive.

Furthermore, it is essential to remember that bees, as industrious workers, do more than just guarantee the survival of plant species. In fact, their constant activity of collecting nectar and pollen extends over a radius of 1.5 km, pollinating about 70% of the planet’s plants and ensuring 35% of global food production. Consequently, my photographs lead us inside the hive to reveal the secrets of these creatures, from the honey super to the brood nest, where the queen and workers carry out their vital tasks for the community.

However, my story is not limited to biological documentation; it also captures the raw emotion of Dario, the son of my friend Andrea. Indeed, as Dario watches these insects with awe, he begins to share a passion for this fascinating world. Andrea, as an expert beekeeper, transmits his technical knowledge with dedication, teaching the boy that the true craft of beekeeping is built on a foundation of respect for the environment.

Ultimately, every gesture reveals the care Andrea nurtures for his surroundings, making these images an invitation to reflect on biodiversity. As a result, the bees’ story is transformed into a warning for a more conscious future. In conclusion, as Dario dreams of following in his father’s footsteps, this “human relay” ensures that the love for the land and the ancient tradition of beekeeping will be protected across generations.

Herculaneum: the spectacle of dawn

PiCo — Sat, 20 Jul 2024 21:00:30 +0000

While the sun begins to rise, visitors find themselves immersed in one of the most evocative and history-rich locations in the Mediterranean. Indeed, the Archaeological Park of Herculaneum, with its ancient streets and ruins, reveals itself in a completely new light, shrouded in the warm colors of the morning.
The visit begins with a stroll along the paths that, two thousand years ago, teemed with life. At this hour, the silence of dawn is broken only by the musical notes that accompany the visitors, creating a truly magical atmosphere.
Specifically, the performances are interpreted by the captivating voice of Marina Bruno, accompanied by Enzo Pietropaoli on double bass and Daniele Sepe on saxophone. Through this blend of history and melody, the ancient city is brought back to life in a sensory journey that stays with the soul.

Lines: memories of a generation

PiCo — Sat, 06 Jul 2024 16:06:51 +0000

We are talking about those born in the first half of the twentieth century, survivors of wars and natural disasters. This generation saw their loved ones emigrate to the coast or to distant Australia. They are the guardians of collective memory and the bond that keeps our roots alive.

For years, I photographed these people among the “lines” (alleys) of the village, seeking the wisdom they hold. I used to sit on their doorsteps; their smiles would smooth the furrows of their faces as they told stories of lived experience.

Today, those doors are closed and the voices have faded. However, I owe my deep connection to this land to that generation. They made me a citizen of the world with a strong, rooted identity. Through my photographs, I honor their legacy, preserving the essence of our community for the future.

Golden threads of the phlegraean fields: the embroiderers guarding Bacoli’s tradition

PiCo — Wed, 15 Nov 2023 19:23:34 +0000

Hands are a people’s oldest memory, capable of weaving stories and safeguarding the deep identity of a territory. In Bacoli, a gem nestled between the Phlegraean lakes and the deep blue of the Tyrrhenian Sea, this memory lives on every day. Indeed, it survives through the skillful gestures of its extraordinary embroiderers of Bacoli.

An Act of Love for Campania’s History
Creating a cross-stitch or a refined cutwork is not merely a technical task. On the contrary, theirs is a true act of love toward history. The embroiderers of Bacoli are the silent heirs to an ancient artisanal tradition. This heritage is deeply rooted in the heart of Campania, where every canvas becomes a stage for local symbols.

Furthermore, the geometric and floral motifs imprinted on the fabrics are never random. Instead, they explicitly recall the unique beauty of the territory:

Ancient Roman ruins emerge as inspiration from the nearby archaeological site of Baia.

Chromatic shades and golden reflections mirror the changing waters of Lake Miseno.

Consequently, each textile creation becomes a true visual hymn to local beauty.

Inside the Houses of the “Mastre”: A “Golden Thread” Between Past and Future
This tradition does not live in cold shops. Instead, it beats within the intimate heart of the town. It is precisely within the walls of their own homes that the mastre (master embroiderers) and elderly women guard the secrets of the craft. By opening their doors, they transform living rooms and courtyards into true living workshops for younger generations.

Crossing the threshold of these homes means immersing oneself in an atmosphere suspended in time. Here, the thread used is not just ordinary cotton or precious silk. It actually transforms into a “golden thread” capable of inextricably linking the past to the future. As a result, this bond keeps the art of traditional embroidery alive through generational passage.

Today, these guardians of the Phlegraean tradition do not limit themselves to creating unique collector’s pieces. They still make heirlooms, finely crafted linens, and contemporary fashion accessories. However, they also actively commit to teaching, passing down an ancient knowledge with the measured patience of yesteryear.

Valuing Campanian and Domestic Craftsmanship
Visiting the Phlegraean Fields area also means discovering this hidden cultural heritage. This world is built entirely on hospitality and shared expertise. Therefore, embroidery represents an excellence of Campanian craftsmanship that deserves to be known, shared, and celebrated. It stands proudly alongside the famous archaeological and natural treasures surrounding it.
