Silent horizons: a slow journey into the rural heart of Italy

PiCo — Fri, 17 Feb 2023 14:54:30 +0000

Welcome to a fragment of suspended time. This gallery is more than just a collection of images; it is the visual diary of a restless wandering through the scents and colors of our land.
Imagine the sound of footsteps on dew-dampened grass, the golden wheat dancing under the July sun, and the calm breath of hills rolling as far as the eye can see. Here, amidst the textures of Italian landscapes and glimpses of Europe, I have sought beauty in the ordinary: a weathered fence, the long shadow of a cypress tree, the mist embracing the valley at dawn.
Every shot is an invitation to slow down, to rediscover that ancestral bond with nature that we so often forget. Let yourself be guided by the colors of the earth and the silence of the fields.

The Supreme Chant: a Woman’s Voice in the wounded forest

PiCo — Sun, 22 Aug 2021 16:11:42 +0000

Badolato: Where Ashes Become Song.

Black charcoal and grey ashes are suffocating the vibrant green of the Mediterranean scrub in the lower Ionian leap of Calabria. Indeed, during the night, the fierce red of the fire dazzles the mountains while a dense column of smoke deeply wounds the starry sky.

Consequently, a light, almost silent ash settles softly upon our houses, while the intense heat burns both our skin and our soul.

During the day, the deafening roar of Canadair planes and helicopters turns the landscape into an apocalyptic film set. However, the fire continues to advance relentlessly, devouring centuries-old olive trees, oaks, and chestnuts. Therefore, after twelve long days of siege, the sense of helplessness becomes total, and you feel yourself burning inside.

This brings us to art as an answer to the impossible. Indeed, where nature falls silent, Art raises its voice with strength. Moreover, the local community has gathered tightly around the Teatro del Carro to say a definitive “no” to this environmental disaster.

Consequently, among the charred trees of the Badolato forest, within a lunar and ghostly landscape, the verses of the Supreme Poet Dante have found a new, vital breath.

The performance “L’ALTISSIMO CANTO. In Voce di Donna” (The Supreme Chant: In a Woman’s Voice), conceived and directed by Luca Maria Michienzi, has successfully transformed this immense pain into a powerful testament. In fact, the voices of Annamaria Zuccaro, Anna Maria de Luca, Lucia Cristofano, and Paola Tarantino, beautifully accompanied by the music of Remo De Vico, have pierced the heavy silence of the ashes. Ultimately, they have restored humanity to a place where everything seemed lost forever.

The submerged legacy: archaeology of waste and the shipwreck of everyday life

PiCo — Fri, 27 Nov 2020 21:39:33 +0000

This paper analyzes the profound impact of anthropogenic pollution on coastal ecosystems. Specifically, it explores the transition of everyday objects from functional tools into permanent debris within the marine environment.

Through a comprehensive visual investigation conducted along coastlines, a stark reality emerges. Indeed, the boundary between the organic and the inorganic appears dramatically blurred. Driftwood intertwines tightly with plastic polymers, while symbolic objects of childhood—such as dolls disfigured by waves, abandoned tricycles, and deflated balls—stand as mute witnesses to a consumerism that lacks a system for natural reabsorption.

The Stratigraphy of Waste and Toxic Resilience
From Macro-Debris to Invisible Microplastics
The accompanying images highlight a clear “stratigraphy of waste.” This disturbing layers range from worn-out tires and industrial containers down to microplastics that are almost completely indistinguishable from sand.

Furthermore, the presence of an overturned plastic chair among the waves, or colored bottles floating like hopeless messages, underscores a deeper issue. It highlights the toxic resilience of materials engineered to last only a few minutes but destined to persist for centuries.

A Cultural Crisis of the “End-of-Life” Concept
Shifting Paradigms in Design and Consumption
Consequently, this analysis concludes that environmental pollution does not merely represent an ecological or chemical crisis. On the contrary, it reveals a profound cultural crisis regarding how we define the “end-of-life” of an object.

The complete decontextualization of these wastes, resurfacing like shipwrecks of a distracted civilization, demands immediate attention. Ultimately, it forces an urgent reflection on the necessity of a new paradigm in design and consumption, ensuring that the sea finally ceases to be the final resting place of our superfluous waste.

The enchantment of suspended time: landscape photography in Calabria

PiCo — Mon, 19 Feb 2018 22:00:41 +0000

Capturing the reflection of beauty, the enchantment of a landscape where everything seems to stand still, even time itself. In the images of this photographic reportage, a grazing flock moves slowly through the golden hills of the hinterland: a sheep raises its gaze, turns its ears, and placidly observes the pristine nature surrounding it.

Statuesque, it appears almost spellbound by the vibrant colors of the Mediterranean flora and the imperceptible sounds enveloping it, becoming an integral part of an ancient and proud ecosystem.

Landscape photography between magic and reality
The observer is equally enchanted, losing themselves while gazing toward those rolling hills, their profiles defined by the slow passage of the flock led by the archetype of the silent shepherd.

This research into landscape photography in Calabria does not merely document transhumance or rural life; it celebrates territories suspended between magic and reality. These shots capture the essence of an authentic land, where the millennial bond between human, animal, and nature stands untouched by the frantic pace of modernity.

The silent choreography of the Grape Harvest

PiCo — Sat, 03 Oct 2015 00:06:45 +0000

The October air was still damp, but the sun had promised to break through the clouds. I was there, a discreet observer, deeply immersed in that Campania vineyard. While the workers moved all around me, my gaze remained fixed entirely on him: the Master.

He was a robust, heavily built figure—a true pillar of experience. His remarkably photogenic face was lined with delicate creases etched into bronzed skin. Beneath a prominent nose, a friendly little white mustache peeked out. Furthermore, his light eyes, incredibly alive, peered from under a green wool balaclava rolled up on his head. Positioned just above his checkered shirt, this unique look framed a labor that was the absolute quintessential of peasant wisdom.

The Ritual and Wisdom of the Hands
Tailor-Like Precision Among the Vines
His hands, deeply marked by the furrows of time, firmly held the pruning shears. The left hand opened with the palm facing the sky, almost like an invitation. Meanwhile, the fingers of his right hand guided the shears, moving through the leaves and shifting them without a hint of violence.
Indeed, his light eyes soon lowered into a brief, intense moment of eye contact with the cluster.

His face expressed a deep concentration that went far beyond mere physical exertion. Before making the final cut, his fingertips performed an invisible task. With a quick pinch, he would remove any imperfect grape, completing a vital ritual that guaranteed the purity of the future must.

Handing the Fruit Down to the Earth
A Cadence That Dictates Time
Shortly after, the shears finally closed. You could not hear a typical metallic clack, but rather a muffled snip. The cut was executed with the raw strength of a robust hand, yet with the sheer delicacy of a tailor. Consequently, the stem was severed precisely where the peduncle meets the mother vine.

The grape cluster, heavy and alive, fell safely into his left hand. The Master brought it to the crate and deposited it with extreme care. Therefore, there was no sudden drop or fall, but rather a genuine handover, as if he did not want to disturb the sweetness of the freshly picked fruit.

The Master advanced slow and inexorable. His rhythm imposed a steady cadence upon the entire harvest. Ultimately, every single gesture of his hands was a lesson in respect for the earth—an act of mastery that spoke volumes through the silence of his movements.

The ever-changing eternal

PiCo — Mon, 25 Aug 2014 20:44:51 +0000

Before light even strikes the sensor, there is a moment of anticipation. Standing before the immensity of the sea, I pause to observe not what the water is, but what it is speaking to me in that precise instant. Photographing the sea is never a static act; it is a desperate, yet beautiful attempt to capture a single breath that will never repeat itself in the exact same way.

My artistic intent stems from a desire to dissect the infinite. I ask myself: what mask does the abyss wear today? I seek its fury, because I need to feel my own fragility against the roar of the salt. I seek its stillness, when my inner turmoil begs permission to dissolve into a perfect horizon line. I chase the reflection, because light upon the water is the only tangible proof of how the invisible can manifest into substance. And finally, I lose myself in pure motion, where water ceases to be mere matter and becomes nothing but rhythm, flowing time, abstraction.

I shoot because the sea is the only mirror that never reflects the same image for more than a single second. I shoot to possess, if only for a fleeting moment, a fragment of that eternal change which is, ultimately, the very essence of our lives.

Vesuvius: the giant gazing upon the sea

PiCo — Sun, 26 Dec 2010 19:52:33 +0000

It is not merely a mountain, nor is it just a volcano. Instead, it stands as the central pivot around which the entire horizon of the Gulf revolves. Its towering presence does not simply occupy the landscape; it defines it.

In this photo gallery, Vesuvius acts not as the subject, but as the ultimate witness. Indeed, it is a giant of solid rock observing both the sea and the passage of time, dominating the scenery with an absolute, undeniable royalty.

A Broken Profile and Imperfect Symmetry
The Visual Compass of the Gulf
Its unique silhouette, dramatically altered by the ancient collapse of Mount Somma, tells a profound story of violent transformation and absolute beauty. Consequently, this imperfect symmetry shapes every single viewpoint from Sorrento to Cape Miseno, serving as a visual and spiritual compass for the region.

Living in its shadow means accepting a constant, unspoken dialogue with the infinite. Furthermore, it is the Genius Loci (the protective spirit of the place) that effortlessly transforms volcanic ash into fertile soil, turning ancient fears into an aesthetic of pure wonder.

The Ever-Changing Regality of the Volcano
From Dawn to Twilight
From the ethereal blue of the early morning, where its silhouette seems to vanish into the sky, to the deep violet-red of twilight that sets its slopes ablaze, Vesuvius constantly changes its wardrobe but never its essence. However, it remains a majestic presence in every single photograph—a natural frame wrapping around the houses perched along its slopes like a perennial Nativity scene.

Ultimately, these images pay tribute to that unique duality: a destructive force that transformed into a generous womb. It is a motionless giant that somehow moves every single emotion of anyone who raises their eyes toward the sky of Naples.

Feline gazes: silent elegance between instinct and soul

PiCo — Sun, 24 Jan 2010 15:55:41 +0000

In a quiet corner of the world made of deep shadows and flashes of light, an ancient elegance moves. It is as silent as a bated breath. Indeed, a cat is not just a pet; it is a true fragment of wild nature that has graciously agreed to live within our walls, bringing along the mystery of primeval forests and the slow, deliberate rhythm of the desert.

When observing a cat, you immediately perceive the profound duality of its nature. There is the surgical precision of an untamed predator waiting in muscles ready to spring. You can see it in the curve of a spine that flexes like a drawn bow, and in a magnetic gaze that seems to see right through the surface of things.

From Untamed Predator to Total Serenity
The Liquid Grace of the Domestic Cat
However, in a single instant, that intense tension melts into total, serene surrender. Its body takes on a soft, almost liquid form, perfectly capable of finding absolute peace within a single stray sunbeam cutting across the floor.

Consequently, its highly developed senses act as invisible compasses. Its whiskers effortlessly read the invisible texture of the air, while its ears catch the faint rustle of a passing thought. Furthermore, that deep, vibrating purr seems to gently heal the wounds of the surrounding world.

A Guardian of Secret Wonders
The Nobility of Feline Independence
Every single gesture a cat makes is a pure exercise in complete independence. It never asks to be owned; instead, it chooses, day after day, to stay by our side.

Ultimately, the cat stands as a silent guardian of secrets, a true aesthetician of laziness, and a masterpiece of art in constant motion. It teaches us the deep beauty of waiting and the nobility of silence. Meeting its gaze means learning to look at our world with brand new eyes—more attentive, calmer, and immensely freer.
